The Dinizulu Center for African Culture
and Research
Aims
of Modzawe, Inc. The Dinizulu Center Of African Culture & Research,
a non profit tax exempt organization, located in Jamaica, Queens,
New York, was founded by Nana
Yao Opare Dinizulu, to provide a venue for the study and teaching
of African Culture. Nana
Dinizulu was a forerunner in the advancement of the study, practice
and dissemination of African culture and traditions for well over
four decades. Through
his dance company and other means, he was the primary vehicle in
the introduction of African culture to hundreds of thousands of
diverse people.
Over
the years, this community based organization has offered programs
for young people and adults, with an emphasis on instilling a sense
of value of self, and pride and purpose through the recognition,
understanding, development and practice of one s own culture.
Aims of Modzawe Cultural Center, home of the Dinizulu Dancers, Drummers
and Singers and the African Diaspora Children s Museum, offers study
and research in African History and Culture via an after school
and evening program. The
program includes African Dance instruction,
master classes with African Dance artists,
lecture series featuring renowned educators and historians of
the African world, and instruction in African music, language, and
arts and crafts.
Aims of Modzawe originated and sponsored the annual Odwira
(African New Year) in New York, the African American Day celebration
in Long Island City, and an annual
outdoor festival in Jamaica Queens.
The organization developed and published literature
and books including Akan Priests in America, Nana Says, and
the Food I Eat in Ghana, written by Nana Dinizulu I.
Also produced were records of African rhythms and songs,
among them, Mystical Africa, Drums of Dinizulu, and Akom:
The Religious Music of the Akans of Ghana and Nigeria.
In the early seventies, Aims of Modzawe, via inexpensive,
affordable charter trips, transported,
for the very first time, numerous planeloads of African Americans
to their homeland, Africa.
While there, they were introduced to the cultural and sacred
life of Ghana and Nigeria.
Aims
of Modzawe, through
these many programs, has unceasingly endeavored to fulfill its primary
purpose of introducing Africa's history and culture to people of
all persuasions and backgrounds.
