The Great Home Coming documentary
This Rare Videocassette is Called The Great Home Coming. It is
a documentary. Each year some Caribbean countries commemorate
Emancipation Day the day chattel slavery was formally abolished
in Britain and its colonies. This Film is about the First ever
Emancipation Day commemoration on the African Continent, which
took place August 1998. The country is Ghana in West Africa. What
makes this Emancipation Day commemoration unique is not only because
it is the first time in Africa, but also because the remains of
two African Enslaved Ancestors of Ghanaian origin are returned
for re-internment in the motherland. This Film takes us through
some historic sites such as The Door of No Return, the final exit
for captives at the Cape Coast Castle Dungeon on the infamous
Trans Atlantic journey into Slavery. A moving and informative
documentary, the film reflects on Ghana, as a pioneer and pacesetter
for the emancipation of Africa and provides inspiration to all
Africans and friends of the continent towards this unique event.
This is an extremely Rare tape! Unfortunately the producer of
this film Noah Owusu passed away mysteriously, shortly after completion
of this fine work. Thus three people that we know of in New York
were given copies to sell. We were one of the fortunate three.
One of the other sources sold out of, I believe 50 copies.
The other expressed to us that he is going to hold on to what
he has. We brought quite a few copies as we participated in the
event in Ghana and also journeyed to Jamaica West Indies
to the Seville plantation for research later that year. (We also
have the Video, Tribute to our Ancestors which documents the traditional
wake/setup and burial for enslaved Africans in Jamaica West Indies
Crystal, a female from Seville Plantation was brought back home
to Ghana as documented in the Film The Great home Coming. The
event in Jamaica West Indies occurred one or two years earlier
I believe.) Below are some photos from the event in Ghana, President
Jerry Rawlings and wife, A Slave reenactment, Remains of Samuel
Carson and Crystal being brought across the sea in a traditional
canoe. This is a must for serious scholars and students of the
Trans Atlantic Slave Trade.
